Samsung Inc. plans LTE smartphone SCH-R900 in U.S.

Samsung Inc. said yesterday that it will release a fourth-generation mobile phone in the United States in September.

The handset is also known as the SCH-R900 for those of you who love dealing with model numbers, and is touted to be the first phone in the world to use LTE which will be sold in US through MetroPCS. Apart from LTE bands, the handset will also support CDMA, carrying a touchscreen display, a 3.2-megapixel camera, Bluetooth connectivity and a QWERTY keyboard to get those text messages and emails out in a flurry. Don't think it will out-text a BlackBerry though.

Samsung Craft r900 will likely be out before the end of this year – so it won’t be just MetroPCS’ first LTE phone, but also the first in North America (because Verizon’s first LTE phone won’t be launched until 2011). The Craft should cost $299.99 free of contract.

FCC approves Samsung’s SCH-R900 LTE phone

With the Federal Communications Commission having given its approval to a forthcoming Samsung R900 handset, the South Korean electronics bigwig Samsung becomes the first company to boast federal regulations on approved 4G LTE handsets.

Sprint is the only major US carrier already using 4G, but is doing so in the Wimax flavor, whereas rival Verizon plans to be the first major N. American carrier to launch LTE 4G services nationwide.

The SCH-R900 offers Bluetooth, and 802.11 b/g WiFi, but other than that, we don’t know much about the device. The device supports 850 and 1900 CDMA/EVDO frequencies, as well as MetroPCS’s 1700 AWS frequency.

Samsung SCH-r900 is expected to launch in June
